Men at Greater Risk for Colon Cancer than Women

colonAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men are at greater risk for colon cancer than women. Abdominal pain, blood in stool, diarrhea, or abnormalities found in X-rays are indicators of possible colon cancer, and these symptoms should be examined under colonoscopy. Colonoscopy is a procedure which doctors use to look for polyps or inflammation of the large intestines and/or rectum.

What are the risk factors?

Genetics and lifestyle habits play a role in risks for colon cancer. If colon cancer runs in your immediate family, such as parent, sibling or child, you are likely to develop the disease. Usually diagnosed in patients over 50, colon cancer could be prevented by lifestyle choices. Diabetes, obesity, and diets low in fiber and high in red meat are associated with colon cancer. Abuse of alcohol and heavy smoking also contribute to this malady.

What happens after colonoscopy?

Most likely you’ll experience drowsiness as the sedatives are still wearing off. You cannot operate any machinery or do anything that requires balance and coordination. A caregiver or family member should be present at the surgery site to pick you up and take care of you once you get home. Avoid fresh fruits and vegetables; have a home health aide prepare soups, pudding, jello or other soft light foods for you.

Extended 24-Hour Post-Colonoscopy Care

Biopsy results take about two to three days to come back. In the meantime, you may need to watch for red flags like fever, significant amount of blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, and dizziness. In such instances, you won’t be able to drive your car to the Emergency Room and your friends or family members may be at work if you are unable to make it to hospital. A-1 Home Care provides round-the-clock 24 hour care for post-colonoscopy patients who need temporary home care services, which include transportation to appointments, assistance with bathing and hygiene, meal preparation, and management of medication.
